JAMES WISDOM KOFI YEKO
aka Dr. Scroogies
Today, we gather to say a final goodbye to our beloved brother, father, uncle, colleague, and friend, James Wisdom Kofi Yeko, affectionately known to many as "Dr. Scroogies." His life was cut short on Monday, May 19, 2025, but the legacy he leaves behind is one of kindness, compassion, and an unwavering love for his family and community.
Born on April 20, 1968, in Henyum, Dodowa, to the late Sgt. James Kofi Yeko and his mother, Madam Jesse Dovi Dagadu, James was the eldest of his siblings. He was a deeply God-fearing man who was known for his generous spirit and his ability to put others before himself.
James's academic journey began at St. Anthony’s Preparatory School and continued through Ghanata Secondary School and Wesley Grammar School, where he completed his O-levels. He then went on to Abuakwa State College for his A-levels. His passion for learning led him to the University of Ghana, Legon, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and Resources Development with Philosophy.
A proud and active member of Commonwealth Hall, also known as The Vandal City, James's spirit of "vandalism" inspired his younger brothers, Vandal Edemus, Vandal Scroogies Junior and Vandal Dodzi to follow in his footsteps. During his time there, he was a member of both the Vandal Militia and the Charismatic Vandal Choir.
After completing his national service as the Accra Liaison Officer at the National Secretariat in Papao, Accra, James dedicated his life to education. His teaching career began at T.I. Ahmadiyya Secondary/Commercial School in Salaga. He also taught at Reliance Academy and Super Stars School before joining the staff at Christian Methodist Senior High School. He later furthered his own education, completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast.
Scroogies was a true "people person"—outgoing, jovial, and well-spoken. He had a gift for connecting with people from all walks of life and was never shy about sharing his views.
His sense of patriotism and activism was a core part of his identity. A staunch social democrat, he was a dedicated "foot soldier of democracy" and a passionate member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), serving as the secretary for the New Russia Last Stop 1(Ponpon) Branch.
As a father figure, mentor, and guiding light to his family, James’s unwavering support, wisdom, and compassion helped everyone around him to grow and thrive. He was a beloved member of every community he joined, and his kindness, empathy, and generosity shaped all his relationships.
We are still heartbroken by the sudden passing of a man who seemed to defy illness. On the afternoon of Monday, May 19, 2025, James collapsed at work. Despite the valiant efforts of his colleagues and the medical team at a nearby clinic, he passed away, leaving behind a profound sense of loss.
James Wisdom Kofi Yeko is survived by his sweet and adorable daughter, Akushika, his mother, and his siblings. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, comrades, fellow vandals, the Chrimesco Cadet Corp, and all who knew him.
Scroogies, you leave behind a powerful legacy of love, resilience, and dedication. Your impact on our lives will forever inspire and motivate us.
May his name be praised forever and ever. And may Scroogies’ soul rest peacefully in the bosom of the Almighty God till the resurrection of the saints who sleep in the Lord.
Amen
